After researching this basket, I believe that this appears to be a vintage Asian, woven willow (or split bamboo) fishing creel basket or fish trap basket (most likely of Philippine Island origin). It has a "removable insert with long, woven "tines" that allows its user to easily place small, "fresh caught" fish inside of it, without the fish escaping. Perhaps it was even used to hold small bait at one time. Although I couldn't find its exact date of origin, I believe it was made sometime in the first half of the 20th century. This basket stands almost 8.5" tall, to the top of its woven lid. The basket itself is 9.5" wide and almost 6" deep. It is completely hand-woven and has no metal fasteners to secure it together. This basket is work of art.yet a model of simplicity and beauty. It almost looks like a simple vase. It is in wonderful shape and could be used in your home as a beautiful piece of antique decorjust about anywhere in your house!
